«Me interesan mucho los seres que logran mantener o recuperar la despejada mirada hermosamente infantil sobre las cosas», Albert Einstein.

When you are an adult and love good films, getting into the feelings and struggles faced by a teenager in his way to reach the maturity, may not sound a good entertainment for an afternoon´s viewing. But Craig Roberts’ stunning performance as Oliver Tate, a teenager trying to find his own identity in Submarine, and Paul Brannigan, a very talented actor performing as Robbie, a young boy trying to find a new opportunity in life fighting against the social injustice in The Angel´s Share, will have you rushing out to buy the tickets to see both films.

It is in their thematic content that the two films resemble each other most. Also common to both films is the fact that the two principal characters are performed by two debutant and talented actors who make credible two stories which are developed in a realistic context.

Submarine, based on the first novel written by the British author Joe Dunthorne, differs from The Angel’s Share for being the opera prima of its director, Richard Ayoade, while The Angel’s Share is based on the original script written by Paul Laverty and its director, Ken Loach, is famous all over the world for the quality of his films.

The strength of Submarine lies in its well chosen decoration set: industrial cemeteries, empty fabrics, isolated rail trains and grey beaches which take the spectator back to a time of uncertainty and anxiety. However, if, as I do, you favour something closer to the comedy, then The Angel’s Share is a definite must-see.
